How to Hire a Part-Time Maid in Singapore: What to Ask, What to Check
By MyCleanHome · March 2026 · 7 min read

Hiring a part-time cleaner involves letting someone into your home regularly — sometimes when you're not there. Getting the right person, through the right channel, with the right agreements in place makes the difference between a smooth long-term arrangement and a frustrating revolving door of unreliable cleaners.
This guide covers what to look for, what to ask, and what to agree on before the first visit — whether you're hiring through a professional company or considering a freelancer.
Company vs freelancer — the foundational choice
The single most consequential decision is whether to hire through a cleaning company or directly from a freelancer platform. The difference:
- Company: Cleaner is a vetted, trained employee. Company carries public liability insurance. If the cleaner is unavailable, the company arranges a replacement. If something goes wrong, there's a company to contact. You're not a direct employer.
- Freelancer platform: Cleaner is an independent contractor. Vetting varies widely. No insurance unless the cleaner carries their own (rare). If they don't show up, you find another one yourself. No accountability chain.
For most households — particularly those leaving access when they're not home — a company with employed staff is the significantly safer choice.
7 questions to ask before booking
1. Are the cleaners your direct employees?
If yes: background checks, insurance and training accountability sit with the company. If they use freelancers: you need to ask all the following questions about the individual cleaner.
2. Is the cleaner background-checked?
At minimum: identity verification and reference checks from previous employers. Ask specifically what the vetting process involves. "We screen all our cleaners" is not an answer — ask what screening means.
3. Do you carry public liability insurance?
If something is accidentally damaged in your home during a clean, insurance covers it. Without insurance, you're in a dispute with someone who may not have the means to compensate you. A professional company answers this directly with "yes."
4. Will I get the same cleaner each time?
For regular bookings, consistency matters. A cleaner who knows your home, your preferences and your standards is faster and more thorough than one who's new every visit. Ask if this is guaranteed or merely attempted.
5. What happens if my regular cleaner is unavailable?
Illness, resignations and scheduling conflicts happen. A company should have a protocol for covering absences — ideally with a replacement who has been briefed on your home. A freelancer who cancels leaves you with no session and no backup.
6. What does the session cover — and is the scope agreed in writing?
Before the first visit, agree on exactly what a session covers: which rooms, which tasks, whether ironing is included, what products they use, what you need to provide (nothing, if they supply their own equipment). This prevents misunderstandings and "that wasn't agreed" conversations later.
7. What is the process if I'm not satisfied?
A professional company has a clear policy: contact them, they address it. Vague reassurances about "doing their best" are not a quality policy.
Before the first visit: what to set up
- Discuss your priorities: Which rooms matter most, in which order, what you're particular about
- Agree on products: If you have specific preferences (eco-friendly, fragrance-free, specific brands), communicate this before the first visit
- Access arrangements: Key, smart lock code, or home presence — agree and confirm before the first session
- Payment method: PayNow, bank transfer or cash — confirm how and when payment is expected
- Rescheduling process: How much notice is required, how to communicate changes
Red flags when hiring a freelancer
- No clear vetting process or vague answers about background checks
- No insurance and evasiveness when asked
- Very low prices that can't be explained by the scope offered
- No written agreement or scope, only verbal promises
- Reluctance to discuss what happens if you're not satisfied
- Requesting cash only with no receipt
