Spring Cleaning Checklist for Singapore Homes — Room by Room Before Chinese New Year
By MyCleanHome · January 2026 · 10 min read

Spring cleaning before Chinese New Year is one of Singapore's most consistent annual traditions — and with good reason. In Chinese culture, cleaning the home before the new year sweeps out the old and makes room for good fortune to enter. In practical terms, it's the one time a year when most Singapore households do a genuinely thorough clean of areas that accumulate months of grime.
The challenge: CNY cleaning should ideally be done before the first day of the new year (decorations and ang pows should already be up), which means most people are racing against a deadline, often with a full work schedule in the way. Booking professional help for the deep work, and handling the decluttering yourself, is the most efficient approach.
This guide gives you a complete room-by-room checklist — what to clean yourself, what to tackle first, and where professional cleaning pays off most.
In this guide:
CNY cleaning timeline — when to start
Chinese New Year in 2027 falls on 17 January. To avoid the booking rush and have your home ready comfortably:
- 3–4 weeks before CNY (late December / early January): Book professional cleaning slots now. This is the window where availability is still good. Carpet, mattress and deep cleaning bookings fill up very fast in January.
- 2 weeks before: Start decluttering — clothes, toys, old documents, kitchen items you haven't used all year. Removing items first makes the actual cleaning faster and more thorough.
- 1 week before: Deep cleaning phase — everything that requires proper effort. Kitchen hood, bathroom grout, windows, tops of cabinets.
- 2–3 days before CNY: Light touch-up clean. Put up decorations. Place new items.
Book professional cleaning early: CNY is our busiest period of the year. We typically fill up 2–3 weeks ahead for the week before Chinese New Year. WhatsApp us as early as December to secure your preferred date.
The right order to do things
Spring cleaning in the wrong order creates rework. The correct sequence:
- Declutter first — remove what doesn't belong before cleaning around it
- Top to bottom — ceiling fans and tops of cabinets before floors. Dust falls down.
- Dry before wet — dust and vacuum before mopping. Wet mopping dust just smears it.
- Surfaces before floors — clean countertops, shelves and windows before the floor, since grime will fall
- Floors last — vacuum then mop as the final step in each room
Decluttering — before a single surface gets wiped
In Chinese tradition, discarding old and broken items before the new year is symbolic as well as practical. Practically, you can't clean surfaces covered in items, and you definitely can't deep clean behind furniture you haven't moved in years.
Go through each room and set aside:
- Clothing unworn in the past year — donate or discard
- Kitchen items unused in 12 months (appliances, duplicates, storage containers)
- Old documents, receipts, expired warranties — shred or bin
- Children's toys and games outgrown
- Expired pantry items and condiments
- Medicines past their expiry date
- Duplicated items — do you need six phone chargers?
The less that's in each room, the faster and more thorough the actual cleaning will be.

The deep areas most Singapore homes skip every year
Even conscientious spring cleaners tend to miss the same areas consistently. These are the spots that accumulate the most grime precisely because they're out of sight:
- Tops of kitchen wall cabinets: A year of grease and dust build up in an invisible layer. Use a step ladder and a damp cloth with degreaser.
- Behind and under the fridge: Dust bunnies, food debris, and the condenser coils at the back accumulate heavily. Pull the fridge out at least annually.
- Inside the washing machine drum and door seal: The rubber door gasket on front-loaders traps moisture and develops mould. Clean the seal thoroughly and run a hot drum-clean cycle.
- Ceiling fan blades: The tops of ceiling fan blades accumulate a thick layer of dust that goes completely unnoticed until you clean them — and a large portion falls directly onto the bed or sofa below on first use after cleaning.
- Window tracks: The grooved channels that window panels slide in fill with years of dust, dead insects, and debris. Use a narrow brush, vacuum, then wipe.
- Under the sofa base: Dust, pet hair, toy parts, and miscellaneous debris accumulate under sofas where they're invisible until you lift the piece.
- Inside air-conditioning vents and trunking: The external cover is often wiped down; the interior tray and vent slats accumulate significant dust that gets distributed into the room every time the AC runs.
What to outsource — and what to do yourself
Spring cleaning is exhausting if attempted entirely yourself. The most efficient approach:
Do yourself (no specialist equipment needed):
- Decluttering — this requires your decisions, not elbow grease
- Wiping down surfaces, shelves, cabinets
- Basic mopping and vacuuming
- Laundering curtains and bedding
- Cleaning inside your own wardrobe and cabinets
Worth outsourcing to professionals:
- Mattress cleaning — requires HEPA vacuum, enzyme-based treatment and wet extraction. Doing this properly yourself is not practical.
- Carpet and rug cleaning — wet extraction equipment is what makes the difference. Consumer rental machines leave too much moisture and don't extract deeply enough.
- Sofa and upholstery — same extraction requirement; wrong DIY cleaning method can spread stains or damage fabric.
- Full deep clean — if the home needs a full reset (grease, bathroom grout mould, accumulated grime), a professional deep cleaning team with the right equipment completes in a day what would take you a week.
